The book was a quick read for me, even with Norman's academic writing style. Having read and re-read his books so many times, it is easier for me to read and adjust to the style.Most of the book involves naval activity. The philosophy is there but you don't have really long sections of nothing but philosophy or how "Goreans" see and do things. It comes in short pieces that fit well within the story. There is action, adventure, some silliness, especially at the end.Speaking of the end of the book. There is a definite hook for a sequel. Norman has done this before and the twist at the end leads you to want o know what has been happening off camera and what Tarl Cabot will do next. (That is all the spoiler I'm going to give you.)I would not call it the best book of the series and what is the worst book varies according to who is reading the books. It is one of his better books for adding to the overall story line and to learn what happens after the book 35, "Quarry of Gor". It is worth getting and reading and a must for everyone who already has the previous 35 books. If you read this as your first Gor book, there are so many references you won't get. You could still enjoy it but knowing the backstory helps understand many things that are said and that happen. It is a long run from the beginning to here and I believe the journey is well worth it.The only downside is the cover is not of the quality of many of the original series covers. Masters of fantasy art created many of those covers for Ballantine and DAW.
